I lost him. My dad. It really broke me. I went to his beach house to distract myself. There, my dad’s neighbor greeted me. But God… this man knew ALL my allergies, which flowers I love, what I don’t eat—EVERYTHING! That wasn’t the worst. The next day, I woke up and saw THIS at my place. Nick… he left it there. HE BROKE INTO MY HOUSE WHILE I WAS SLEEPING! I grabbed my things and ran away ASAP. Suddenly, I heard rustling and footsteps behind. They were getting faster. I saw a silhouette in the bushes—it was HIM! I could hear his breathing. I screamed, until he covered my mouth, saying: “QUIET! Didn’t your dad ever tell you that I’m…”
It took me a moment to fully understand what he was saying. My heart was pounding in my chest, and my head was spinning. I couldn’t breathe, his hand over my mouth felt suffocating. His voice was so calm, eerily calm. My mind raced as I tried to pull away from him, but his grip was too strong.
“Listen to me, Kate,” he whispered, his face inches from mine. “You need to understand, this is for your own good.”
My brain couldn’t make sense of what he was saying. For my own good? Who was this man, and why did he know so much about me? Why did he know my allergies, my likes and dislikes? Why did he break into my house? And most terrifying of all, why was he following me?
I wanted to scream, but I was too scared. What if no one would hear me? What if he was just waiting for me to make a noise so he could hurt me? He must’ve seen the fear in my eyes because, after a long, tense moment, he finally let go of my mouth.
“Okay, now you can talk,” he said, his grip still firm on my shoulders.
I took in a shaky breath. “What do you want from me?” My voice was barely a whisper.
Nick took a step back, his eyes never leaving mine. “It’s not what I want. It’s what your dad wanted.” He said the words like they were the most obvious thing in the world. But I had no idea what he meant.
“Your dad,” he continued, “he was a great man, Kate. But you never understood him, did you?”
A strange knot formed in my stomach. “What do you mean? My dad… He was my dad. He was always there for me.”
Nick shook his head, his expression turning serious. “That’s what you think. But there was more to him. He wasn’t just a man who loved his daughter. He was also a man who made deals. Deals that affected more than just his life.”
I didn’t know where he was going with this, but my confusion deepened. “What kind of deals?”
Nick paused, his eyes scanning the dark woods around us. It was as if he were looking over his shoulder, making sure no one else was listening. “Let’s get inside first,” he said. “We can’t talk about this out here.”
I wanted to refuse. I wanted to run, to scream, to call the police. But something inside me—something deep down—told me I needed to hear him out. I had to know why he was here. Why he knew so much about my life. I hesitated but then nodded slowly, still too afraid to make a sound.
We moved swiftly toward my house, and as we reached the porch, I looked around nervously. The air felt thick with tension. Nick opened the door for me, stepping inside after me. The house felt different, somehow colder, like it had been waiting for this moment.
I closed the door behind us, locking it. “What’s going on, Nick?” I asked, my voice trembling. “Why are you here? What do you want from me?”
Nick walked over to the couch, sitting down with a sigh. He looked up at me, his face softened with an expression I couldn’t quite read. “Your father was involved in something bigger than both of us, Kate. And now, it’s your turn to take up his role.”
I couldn’t stop myself from laughing nervously. “What are you talking about? My dad was just a lawyer. He didn’t—”
“No, Kate. He was far more than that.” Nick interrupted, his tone turning serious again. “He was part of an underground network, a group that dealt with secrets. Secrets that could ruin people. He spent years protecting them, hiding them, using his skills as a lawyer to cover up what should’ve stayed buried.”
My heart sank. My dad? Involved in something like that? This didn’t make any sense. But the way Nick said it, with such certainty, made it hard to deny.
Nick leaned forward, his eyes fixed on me. “I didn’t want you to be involved in this. But now that your father’s gone, someone has to take his place. Someone has to keep things under control. And I think it’s you.”
“Control?” I repeated, my mind racing. “What do you mean? What do you want me to do?”
He sighed. “Your father left you something, Kate. Something he never told you about. I was supposed to wait for you to come to me, but you never did. Now, I’m here, and I’m trying to protect you. The only way you’ll be safe is if you take his place. You have to continue his work. You have to make sure the secrets stay hidden.”
I felt dizzy, my head spinning with his words. “I don’t understand. This doesn’t make any sense. What kind of secrets? What are you talking about?”
Nick stood up, walking toward me. “I can’t explain everything right now. But trust me, your dad didn’t just work for the law. He worked for the people who control it. And now, those people are coming after you. They think you know too much.”
“Too much about what?” I asked, my voice breaking.
“The truth. The truth your father kept hidden. The truth you’re about to learn.”
Suddenly, everything clicked. The strange neighbor, Nick’s unsettling knowledge of my life—it all made sense now. My dad had been part of something dangerous, and now, because of his death, I was the one who was being targeted. But I wasn’t ready for this. I wasn’t ready to be dragged into some twisted world of secrets and lies.
Nick seemed to sense my hesitation. “Kate, you don’t have a choice. If you don’t take control of this, they’ll come for you. They’ll come for everyone you love. And they’ll make sure no one knows the truth.”
I felt a chill run down my spine. Nick’s words felt like a warning, and I wasn’t sure if he was trying to protect me or manipulate me. But one thing was clear: my life would never be the same. I had to make a choice. A choice I wasn’t ready for.
“I can’t,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “I don’t know how to do this. I don’t even know what I’m supposed to do.”
Nick’s expression softened, and for the first time, I saw a glimpse of something that resembled sympathy. “You don’t have to do it alone,” he said. “I’ll help you. I’ll guide you. But you have to trust me. You have to trust that I’m doing this to protect you.”
I stared at him, my mind racing. Was I really going to put my trust in this man, a stranger who knew far too much about me? Was I going to follow in my father’s footsteps, a man I thought I knew, but now realized was full of secrets?
“I don’t know,” I whispered. “I don’t know if I can trust you.”
Nick stepped closer, his voice quiet and sincere. “You can. I promise.”
But in that moment, I realized something. No matter what choice I made, my life would never go back to the way it was. The world I knew was gone, replaced by something darker and more dangerous. And as much as I wanted to run, to forget everything and start over, I knew deep down that I couldn’t.
“I’ll do it,” I said finally. “I’ll take up my dad’s role. But on one condition.”
Nick raised an eyebrow. “What’s that?”
“I’ll do it on my terms,” I said, my voice stronger now. “I won’t be your puppet. I’ll figure this out myself. But I need your help, at least for now.”
Nick nodded slowly. “Deal.”
As the tension in the room began to ease, I felt a strange sense of resolve. The road ahead would be difficult, but I wasn’t alone. Not anymore.
And maybe, just maybe, that was the only thing that mattered.
Life doesn’t always go the way we plan. Sometimes, we’re thrust into situations that challenge everything we thought we knew. But the most important thing is how we respond. We can either let fear control us, or we can find the strength to rise above it.
So, if you’re facing something unexpected, something that seems too big to handle, remember this: you have more strength inside you than you realize. Take that first step, even if it’s a scary one. The journey might be hard, but it’s yours to make.
