Needed because the world always eventually sends someone smiling to take what they did not build.

Needed because memory alone, however holy, sometimes must be reinforced with proof.

Needed because there are seasons when the only thing standing between a family and erasure is one stubborn person who refuses to be intimidated by polished language.

Gerald put his hands on the porch rail.

He was old. He knew that. His knees told him in the mornings. His hands told him in the cold. His reflection sometimes startled him with how much of Raymond had come into his face. But standing there in the dark, with the farmhouse behind him and the land ahead, he did not feel diminished.

He felt placed.

The way a post is placed deep enough to hold.

The way an oak is placed by years.

The way a man is placed when he has done the one thing his father asked him to do.

Don’t ever let them take it from you.

Gerald looked out over the dark acres and answered the dead with the only answer that mattered.

“I didn’t.”
